Anatomy of a Concept

For the last few months I've been working on a script in between work and freelance projects, it started as just something that was fun to sketch and then I doodled a character rough that I had a eureka moment with.

This changed the concept in my head and I wanted to go back to an old idea and work it in to balance with the lighthearted nature of the idea's I was having, it would allow me to do something funny, light and a bit random with a dark side to it to add some depth. This is were a lot of stories I heard growing up and people I'd encountered would get amalgamated into the criminal element of this story.

So now I had a main character and a title, I needed a script and to think about what i wanted to do with it, and I realised that the stories I like, in mediums from film to comic, all tend to be centered around female characters, 'Ghost in the Shell', 'Alice in Wonderland', 'Sky Doll', 'Winters Bone' and so on.

This realisation wasn't a surprise to me, I was raised by three women and a lot of the important figures in my life that have taught and helped me along the way have been women. The story was fun to plan out and is in a rough form for now, and Creator Owned Day was coming up so I decided to do a preview image of the main character, she's a lot of fun to draw and her design is one that has evolved, the cartoonish look is toned down she's a smart beautiful lady with a huge amount of hair and a love of punk/industrial music. Here's the process of the drawing followed by the final preview image.

Four App Icon's

Four app icons for different games/apps.

Kid's Game Character

Character design, for a kids game I’ve been working on, the characters are mostly the traditional monster characters but I wanted to add some different takes on characters and add something different.

Various Designs

These are mostly reminder graphics for posts about events with a couple of typography pieces.

Character Concepts

Character concepts from a project I'm working on this is fun as it's stepping out of my comfort zone and doing fantasy characters.

DJ Goldy and Mister Critical - Muted in Wonderland

This was a lot of fun as I'm a fan of 'Adventure Time' when I started on this I was told something like the cartoon with the boy and dog for style and it had no title, and I suggested a few things, and 'Muted in Wonderland' got a positive response and the first thing that came into my head was the two DJ's in a field with some hills and icy mountains in the background, and have the characters in muted colours while the background was bright and vibrant and this was the end result.

Then I was asked to add some craziness and odd creatures to it, so I did.

Ricki Rawness Space Raps Cover Art

For Ricki Rawness - Space Raps, which will be released as a series of 4 EP's, decided to go for something i had never tried before, a quadriptych and this happened, for influence i wanted something in the 2001 vein to begin with and get odder as it progresses across, and here's a look at the four parts as standalone pieces.

Movie Quiz Graphics

Here's some graphics from a game i worked on, first up is a home screen that didn't make it into the final game, the company already had one designed:

and here's some alternate designs for the end of the game screen done in the style of different movie logo's:

the posters game type was alot of work 200 questions where the posters had to have the title removed from them, the one that i was happiest with is Scindlers list it was a chaellenge to remove the title and leave the image not looking mangled:

and the final two are the keypad i designed to take the place of the default apple one, went for a retro style to it and made it look like a typewriter, here's an ingame screenshot and a WIP of the keypad:

App Graphics

A little four frames of a walk cycle image for the home screen of a animated movie quiz app, fun to do and the aim was to create a generic character from the company logo to avoid infringing on any copyright. And also a gray scale version of it.
